Due to my back injury back in 2013 I stopped pursuing photography as a job and went back to it being a hobby. Once in a while I'd do a photo shoot but rarely asked for payment.
I was asked a few months ago to take photos for a small wedding, and I would even be paid! I agreed to take the job but made sure the bride understood my problem with my back injury sometimes causing me to have to cancel. She said she knew beforehand (groom is my husband's friend).
I have been nervous and excited. I bought a new flash for my camera. I was looking forward to a little extra pocket money. The wedding is mid January so I was getting ready.
The day after Christmas however I started throwing up. "Meh, it's the 24 hour stomach bug going around. I'll be better by Wednesday"
Wednesday night rolls around and I am still throwing up and at this point not even keeping water down. Severe back pain starts up and I thought to myself, "A kidney stone? Now? nah. Must just be the strain from puking"
Thursday I was in the Emergency Room and yup. I had a kidney stone on top of a full blown stomach bug. I was given meds and two bags of IV. The doctor said explained what was going on and added "this might take about two weeks to resolve itself," TWO WEEKS???
Because the wedding was 9 days away I contacted the bride about what was up and that I might need to back out.
I had another trip to the Emergency Room on Friday due to still puking and at that point the bride told me they found another photographer on such short notice.
It's about 3 days now till the wedding and I am still sick so I definitely would not have been able to take the photos.
I gotta admit I'm pretty bummed out. My first paid job in 3 years and it wasn't my back ruining it, it was a stomach bug and kidney stone.
